![]() ![]() The LST-class of ship-tanks gave Allied commanders the ability to land traditional tanks, troops, vehicles and other supplies directly onto enemy-held shores to maximize the impact of the fighting forces charged with taking those arenas. ![]() It helped carry 59 vehicles and 440 men ashore in that theater of the war. LST-325 got its warm-up to the Allied European invasion in the North African Campaign after launching from Philadelphia in October 1942. Today one of those vehicles, USS LST-325, stands ready for inspection by visitors on the riverfront of its birthplace. ![]() At its height the production facilities employed more than 19,000 people that churned out two ships per week. In the years between the wars research into these vehicles commenced, and by the time of World War II workers in Allied nations were building such vessels in their communities.Ĭommunities like Evansville, where the shipyard was responsible for building 167 amphibious Landing Ship-Tanks during the war in the largest production facility of its kind in the U.S. ![]()
